The brightest witch of her age. She would like you to know she worked extremely hard for that distinction.
Hermione Jean Granger arrived at Hogwarts already knowing more than most students who had been there for years, with a hand perpetually in the air and the reasonable expectation that knowing the right answer ought to count for something. It does. It also, as she discovered, counts for considerably less than friendship, loyalty and the willingness to break a rule when the rule is clearly wrong — lessons Hermione learned with the same thoroughness she applied to everything else, and then exceeded. She walked into the series correcting people's pronunciation and walked out of it having helped defeat the most dangerous dark wizard in a century. The revision paid off.
What makes Hermione endure as one of literature's most beloved characters is precisely the combination that makes her occasionally insufferable in the early chapters: she is brilliant, she is principled, she takes things seriously, and she never once stops caring about getting it right. She is the friend who does the reading, questions the authority, forms the organisation, and holds everyone together when holding together is the only option left. She is, for an enormous number of readers who found themselves somewhere in her, the character who made it feel acceptable to be exactly who you were.
Emma Watson's portrayal across eight films gave her warmth, humour and the precise flicker of exasperation that a decade of being surrounded by Ron and Harry produces quite naturally. The character arrived complete. The performance understood that completely.
