Nobody expected the Guardians of the Galaxy to work. James Gunn understood something essential: that the funniest stories are often the most heartfelt ones, and that a found family of broken, ridiculous, deeply loveable outcasts could carry an entire trilogy on their shoulders without ever losing the music.
