Molly Brett grew up in a country district of Surrey, the daughter of Mary Gould Brett, a gifted animal painter. She had little formal training but, after a correspondence course, started illustrating and writing children's books. She worked in watercolour and pen and pencil and was a member of the Society of Authors, the Women's Institute, and the local Lunch Club and Art Society. Her paintings for children have been widely reproduced as prints, greeting cards and postcards and she illustrated her own books for children.
